DRUM REPAIR SHOP

How to build a snare drum.
A first for me, teaching someone else how to build a drum from scratch. Not to mention teaching someone how to use tools & do finishing work. Skills that take decades to understand.
@estebanseunarine and I have already restored and recut edges on his vintage 6ply Ludwig kit. Now for the real test. Can you build your own drum from scratch?
The inspiration for this build came from a build I did last year for my self using a Cask steam bent walnut shell. It’s been an absolute joy for both of us to play and record with.
Esteban wanted his own snare but with a few different details to suit his needs. We started with a 14”x5.5” steam bent walnut shell flawlessly made by @caskdrumcraft . 10 of my brass lugs made by @champagnedrum1 . A brass @inde_drum throw off and butt plate. A air vent with no grommet, just a cleanly drilled and finished wood hole. Topped off with a Drum Repair Shop leather badge. @evansdrumheads all around. Genera dry on the batter and a snare side 300 with brass puresound custom pro snare wires.
In total we had 3, 2 hour sessions with a bit of homework for applying all the oil and wax. Clocking this build in at about 8 hours total.
I helped Esteban set up tools and start off on most tasks, but all the work on this drum comes from his hands. He listened well, had the ability to figure it out and understand the task at hand.
It was a pleasure to be able to show someone the process and share knowledge about how drums should be and what they do.
This drums absolutely rips btw (maybe we’ll shoot a video with it later)

Ludwig 6ply came in for a set up for @_kmd3
These modern 6ply shells are built better than the shells you’d find in the 70’s but they are a bit thinner. Which is a good/bad thing depending on how you look at it.
Like most drums even brand new ones, the edges and snare beds will always need some attention.
Edges were levelled, profiled, sanded and sealed to perfection ππ»
The snare beds were adjusted to create a better arch on the snare side and allow for better tuning.

Yamaha Recording Custom came in for a set up for @_kmd3
The factory edges were in pretty good shape but the outer profile could use a bit more attention to detail. Choosing the right round over bit can make a world of difference in your drums ability to tune.

Brand new Tama SLP came in for a set up for @guyanthonydrums
Out of the box this is a really good snare, decent edges and ok snare beds. Like anything if you want more out of your instrument having the bearing edges and snare beds adjusted can make a world of difference in tuning, head life and playability.
The edges were levelled and the peak was rounded in a bit further in order to hit the sweet spot. The snare beds were recut to allow for a more versatile snare system which won’t choke out your drum.
New or old, drums benefit from a proper set up!

Ludwig Classic Maples came in for new edges for @_kmd3
These new Ludwig’s are built WAY better than the drums that inspired them. Like anything these factory edges will only cause you frustrations and the potential thought of “maybe I should sell this kit”.
All your problems can be solved by simply having your edges profiled properly. Bearing edges matter more than any head choice or shell type.
Probably the nicest wrap I’ve seen on a Ludwig too!

Yamaha Recording Customs headed back to Montreal for @samlambrt
These are mordern RC shells and there is not much I could pick apart on these. The peak of the edge was pretty close to being in the right spot. The profile was just a bit to shallow which led to a limited tuning range.
After a quick level and a properly profile round over these drums will be easier to tune and offer more tuning range so you can achieve optimal tones!
Thanks for sending your drum Samuel!

Ludwig “blackrolite” came in for a new Ludwig P88 throw off and butt plate for @_kmd3
These are great upgrades on these snares because it gives you a reliable snare system.
One thing you have to do is drill out the stock mounting holes to allow the new bolts to fit through the shell along with drilling and taping new holes on the butt plate.

George Ways came in for new edges for @_kmd3
Probably one of the more controversial kits to pull through the shop. I got a lot of messages as to why I’d cut edges on a kit like this. The reason is a simple, to offer a wider tuning range.
While these drums are basically flawless, like most drums the edges just cause issues when putting new heads on or trying to change tunings. In lower tunings these also felt very dull and flappy.
Now with newly profiled edges, these drums work the way they should. Effortless tuning and clear tones π€π»

Pearl Custom Classic solid shell came in for new edges for Warren!
Super cool rare Pearl drum from the 90s. Like most drums the issue with this was the fact it could never stay in tune. If you continually struggle with spending way too much time trying to tune your drum, chances are it’s not you. It’s your bearing edges.
Edges were levelled and properly profiled to open up the tuning range and give your heads less wear and tear along with keeping that stick rebound on pointππ»
Snare beds were also cut to allow the snare wires to function as they should.
