This WFL 14”x 10” came in and needed a full spa treatment. What started as a black spray painted blue sparkle drum ended up as a chopped 14”x6.5” yellow pearl work of art. I haven’t done a full modification like this
This WFL 14”x 10” came in and needed a full spa treatment. What started as a black spray painted blue sparkle drum ended up as a chopped 14”x6.5” yellow pearl work of art. I haven’t done a full modification like this in a few years and I enjoyed it! After removing the old wrap and chopping the shell down to size I had to pop off the original reinforcement ring and reinstall it. I also changed the location of the throw off and butt plate to a “normal” position. The original position was to have the throw off directly under the badge which I think looks strange. Edges and snare beds were shaped properly and the inside of the shell got a coat off oil to protect it from drying out. All in all this is a vintage drum that performs better than it did when it was new. I can guarantee that! Thanks Rob for brining this one by! 🥁 #drums #vintagedrums #wfldrums #bearingedges

Sonor SQ1 toms came in for bearing edges for my guy @k_j_kunks In this case these drums had dead level edges but the issue was a very limited tuning range. While there was a round over on the outside it wasn’t far enough in to have the peak sitting in the sweat spot. After a quick level and rounding in the outer edge a few more plys these drums have completely opened up and come alive. I will never be able to explain why edges aren’t done properly from the start. If that was the case I’d have no job! One guarantee I can make after 1000s of edges, I’ve never once had someone say “Wow, these drums sound terrible now, you f$@!ed them up” Usually the response is “I don’t know why I waited this long to do this” or “I can finally tune my drums quickly and get the sounds I’ve been looking for” Your drums deserve love, bring them to a qualified drum tech! #drums #sonordrums #bearingedgesmatter #drumtech #dontletBIGDRUMgetyoudown

I’ve never really introduced myself on this page, as I’ve always tried to keep things mostly about my drum work. Over the years, I’ve had a lot of people start following along from all over the globe. So, for those of you who don’t know me or how I ended up doing this, let me introduce myself. I’m Ian, and I’m a one-person operation. I’ve always planned to keep it that way for quality control reasons. I’ve grown up around tools and have spent the last 20 years working in various trades, which eventually led me to starting Drum Repair Shop. I’ve done everything from new home construction to residential renovations. For the last 13 years, I’ve worked in furniture shops building high-end designer furniture and commercial public art projects. Wood, metal, or plastics—I’m no stranger to the tools or the materials. I’ve been playing drums since I was 6 years old and have played in bands since my early 20s. Drums have always been my biggest obsession. As a kid, I used to dream about all the drum brands I’d be able to buy once I grew up and got a job. Now I spend most of my time working on those exact drum kits. When I was 21, I was gifted an extremely beat-up and left-for-dead 1960s Gretsch round badge, which I very quickly had to learn how to piece back together and make playable so I could join my first band. That basically kick-started everything for me. Years later, at 24, I had someone teach me how to build my own snare drum. I figured if I could build furniture, then why not try building the instrument I loved to play? Every time I played shows with that Gretsch kit and my newly built walnut snare, I’d have people asking why my drums sounded so much better than theirs. At the time, I was completely unaware of what I was doing or the effect it would later have on my life. Every show I played led to someone asking if I could work on their drums. Simply through word of mouth and lots of late nights, Drum Repair Shop was born. It’s pretty crazy to me that this is what I get to do for a living. If it wasn’t for every single person who has shared my name with other drummers, producers, engineers, and musicians, none of this would be possible. 🫶🏻
This George Way came in from Regina for my guy @justinhauck These are pretty amazing drums, it just felt a little lack luster do to its edges. Otherwise it’s a great build. A quick level and recut brings these edges to where they should be.

Premier’s came in for local legend @andersunoerickson of @atticariots These drums got leveled and recut edges, all wrap seams were cleaned and restructured. All hardware and wrap were cleaned and polished. I also fabricated some new 3/8&rdq

The more I work on these vintage Premiers the more I love them. They have such clean and beautiful shells in comparison to other kits of this era. After years of abuse on tour these edges became quite rocky causing them to fall out of tune easily. After a level, recut, sand and seal these edges are ready and able to keep in tune during a show 🤘🏻 #drums #yamahadrums #killswitchengage #bearingedges
Yamaha Recording Custom 10” Tom came in for some edge work for Rob! This drum had been dropped causing the edge to flatten out in a few spots. Now with a quick level and recut this drum is back to being tuneable and reliable. #drums #yamaha
